Meet Evelyn.
Evelyn Asher's life is filled with pioneer experiences: a flatlander, she hunkers down on gravel roads and switchbacks in Western North Carolina, at ease mentoring students, recruiting and motivating business colleagues, creating unique charity fundraisers that became community tradition, and comforting elders and their families on caregiving journeys.
She has been acclaimed as a master kayaker having paddled in three times without tipping over. Her biggest hiking challenge/nemesis was Boone Fork Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway. "I'll catch you" are not words one wants to hear climbing down what seems an abyss. Evelyn who once earned money reading to a blind college student would do that for free today. She starts her week as a reading mentor to elementary school children.
She has cruised down the Yangtze River for five days. Her favorite one-woman show was performed last year at the Valborg Theater on the campus of Appalachian State University. She proudly wears her "Spit Like A Big Girl" t-shirt to advertise that play written and performed with emotion by Clarinda Ross. She is also a big fan of Preston Lane, Artistic Director of Triad Stage and Derek Davidson who teaches theater and directs plays for Appalachian State University.
Evelyn's five children and grandchildren share her passion for the human spirit. Since they live in three different states, they make her wish for wings and a custom sail with Valerie Weingrad.
